The Sweet Dilemma

This blog is dedicated to something most of us loved when we were little: a bag of sweets! Why? Because they are sweet, delicious, and make children happy. However, as a father and an adult, I tend to see the downsides of these treats.

This highlights the differing perspectives that children and parents—adults—have of the world around them. Children want to view everything in bright terms, having fun, with no worries, simply enjoying themselves and laughing. On the other hand, parents and adults see risks, consider costs, and try to avoid unnecessary trouble.

With sweets, the situation is quite similar. Our kids adore them and eagerly await visits from friends and relatives, knowing they will bring sweets. Aunts, friends, and grandparents all supply our children with these treats, and the kids love it. Meanwhile, we as parents, are acutely aware of the downsides: too much sugar, toothache, unnecessary dentist visits, and even skipped meals because of excessive indulgence in sweets.

Not to mention that children often argue over whose candy is whose. Another issue is excessive consumption; children should ideally have one or two sweets and save the rest for another occasion. Unfortunately, this is often wishful thinking. I’ve sometimes discovered heaps of candy wrappers in one spot after a little culprit has devoured nearly half a packet and left the evidence behind. That’s far from ideal.

We do our best to monitor our children’s behaviour and ensure they enjoy sweets in moderation. Yet, I find it can feel like a game of cat and mouse. How is your battle with sweets going?
