Karim’s Monster Carp
What an absolute belter of a day! We went fishing – Karim, Lilly, Grandma and me. We were heading to a pond we’d never been to before. For me it was a proper special moment. When I was a teenager I used to swim and mess about at that same pond, and now, years later, I’m back there spending time with my own kids. Time really does fly, doesn’t it?
The pond sits right in the middle of the woods – brilliant spot for soaking up a bit of nature. On the way we spotted salamanders, all sorts of colourful little insects, and the kids were buzzing with excitement about the day ahead. And it turned out cracking! Karim landed his biggest fish ever. After a while and a couple of little ones he got a proper bite, and then this massive battle kicked off that went on for over an hour. He was so knackered trying to get the fish out that he asked me to lend a hand. I told him he had to do all the work himself – it was his fish, his fight. At times we could actually see the thing in the water even though it was trying to hide down deep. It was a huge carp. The fish wasn’t having any of it and kept thrashing about in every direction, trying to escape.
In the end Karim won. I jumped into the water with the net and between us we got the carp out – it was proper heavy, and I’d never seen a fish that big before. Karim was buzzing, Lilly was filming the whole thing on the phone, and Grandma couldn’t believe her eyes. We carefully took the hook out of the fish’s mouth, snapped loads of photos, and then released it back into the pond. We measured it – 95 cm (37.5 inches) long and about 10 kg (22 pounds). Absolute mind-blowing catch for a ten-year-old lad. Later on he also caught two baby pike.
What a day! I got thinking afterwards – parents really should share moments like this with their kids. These times get etched into their minds forever. The bond between child and parent grows stronger. It’s our job to make the kids laugh, feel appreciated, enjoy the things they love, and just be happy. All that chatting, talking things through, understanding each other and learning from one another makes both kids and parents better people. While we’re busy raising and teaching our children, we’re far from perfect ourselves – the kids teach us too and show us exactly where we can do better. Every little success builds their self-confidence and resilience. It was an amazing day for all of us. Lesson learned today? Spending time with our kids is the best time ever!
